Berry Tasty!

by la_spice @ Tuesday, Oct. 07, 2008 - 08:02:45

Pyracantha or Firethorn is a very popular shrub that grows in abundance. Usually the berries are red dark orange or even yellow. I've never seen these colours before.

I wonder if the birds like them just as much?

I always thought that the pyracantha's berries were poisonous but the fact is, they are entirely edible and there is at least one recipe I've discovered for pyracantha jelly.

If you have a surplus of pyracantha berries and can pick them before the birds rob you of them, you might enjoy the taste of pyracantha jelly. I’m told it is quite tasty, much like apple jelly in appearance and flavour.

Here it is for you aspiring cooks:

To extract the juice, boil pound of berries in 3/4 cup of water for one minute. Strain the juice through clean cloth. To one cup juice, add one teaspoon lemon juice and package powdered pectin. Bring it to hard boil; add 3/4 cup sugar and continue boiling for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Pour into hot, sterilized jars.

They had a lovely translucence that really caught my eye.

So I see. When can expect the jelly?

Thank you :)

They grow well in coastal areas and the jelly keeps for a long time.

But do you realise how many berries there are in a pound???

Not specifically I would think lots and lots and unless it was a survival issue much easier to go to Tesco and buy some Bramble jelly :)

Cue a verse from one of my poems:

My mother said
When I was a girl
If you eat burnt toast
Then your hair will curl

My hair is naturally curly....
So what do you make of that??????????

Perhaps your mum ate lots of burnt toast?

My mother is very fussy about her toast!!!!
And before you say it....
My father's fussy to!!!
Ah!....But he has curly hair!!!!

Nice pics La_S, like you, I have two of them in my garden, orange and red, never seen that shade before, just maybe you have a gold mine there if you send a sample to one of the growers, or even a photo.

It was just growing in a hedge in Lancashire and caught my eye as I walked by it.
