This statue in Birmingham depicts three of the greatest engineers:
Matthew Boulton - English manufacturer and engineer.
James Watt - Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer.
William Murdoch - Inventor of gas lighting.
All three worked together in Birmingham.
What a discredit to the great men in painting the statue in cheap gilt paint and have it with one of the cheapest backdrops in town.
Good grief...what an abortion!! That's crass...and, as you say, hardly a dignified setting for three such enterprising gentlemen....tacky in the extreme...how sad...GBHs..

The word incongruous springs to mind - what's wrong with the natural look of stone or bronze?

Well, at least they're celebrting Engineers, no-one does that terribly often. Especially now in the celebrity culture. Mind you, they're not going to encourage people if this is how they laud them!! Maybe they're trying to blind people so that they don't have to see the backdrop?
