It's called a Hoopoe and it's been in my garden on and off for the last three or four days.
You can read about it here:

That bit on its head is a crest which stands up like a Mohican when it's disturbed. I wish I could get a shot of that!

Thank you - I'm just feeling my way round the controls of my new camera.
This little fellow has been visiting my garden for the last few days and I was so pleased that he came back this afternoon.

Not a criticism, but I think I'd teak the contrast a little... or better yet adjust the curves.... the second and third images would really come alive.
| la_spice [Member] 21/07/08 @ 21:00 |
Adjust my curves - how do I do that?

Thank you - it was my first day (and first shots) with a different camera. I'd only just charged up the battery pack and had only the in-built memory which would only let me take four shots at a time!!!!!
So taking that into account I'm well happy!!
Lovely photos, stunning bird to have visit your garden

I feel quite privileged - it's here again today but has been playing hide and seek - I think it knows I'm after another picture!!!
oh its a bit of a tease then
| la_spice [Member] 22/07/08 @ 10:16 |
Exactly - I was without a camera for the first few days it was around and it was very frustrating.
Very good indeed; I cant believe how close you've got to it !

It was just outside my back door! It seems to have found a nice worm hole there!!!
