Day out at New Lanark.

by joebangles @ Tuesday, Jul. 15, 2008 - 23:28:46

New Lanark World Heritage Site, a beautifully restored 18th century cotton mill village in Southern Scotland, close to the Falls of Clyde.

The village first rose to fame when Robert Owen was mill manager from 1800-1825. Owen transformed life in New Lanark with ideas and opportunities which were at least a hundred years ahead of their time. Child labour and corporal punishment were abolished, and villagers were provided with decent homes, schools and evening classes, free health care, and affordable food.

At New Lanark.

About 6 miles from my house Joe! Glad you had a good time. The walk up the Falls of Clyde are lovely.

Hi Gil, you obviously live in the same area as I do and we are so lucky with all the parks and country areas that are so close, and mostly free.

Been to New Lanark many times - usually when people visit -0 the Museum is a great place for kids.

The top one is great, but I don't know why! It just works, really lovely.

Tom.

Thanks Tom, yes, I suppose it could really be anywhere but the "drain part" is original.

There is a photo competition in the Lanarkshire area and I am entering this pic, never been in to a comp before, says that it has to be mounted, not sure how it should be mounted, or where to get the "mounts".

I don't expect to win but taking part will be good enough for me.

Hi Trin, yes, nice place to visit especially if the weather is good, not that easy to get to by public transport but you have a car, so that's good.

It is also free, except for the "experience" tour.

Beautiful! My grandfather was born in Lanark.

Hi Dora, yes, it's pretty nice especially if the sun is shining.

Grandfather? that must have been back in the early 1900s, possibly the mill would have still been working then.

Jeez, your good Kev. Yep, bout the early 1900s. He emigrated to Aussie around 1920 (can't remember off the top of my head)

Thanks Decado, it is a lovely place to be if the weather is good especially if it has been raining heavily just prior to that and the falls are in full flow, it is a bit of a hike to get to them but they have built in a boardwalk.

Thanks Rabbit, the top one I am entering into a photo comp in Lanarkshire, it has to be mounted, don't know what that means but will find out, I don't expect to win but just entering will be OK.
