Aracnophobia!

by la_spice @ Sunday, Jul. 06, 2008 - 09:53:52

I've finally identified this little fellow!

Typical crab spiders are predators that lie in wait to ambush their prey. Though their chelicerae, or jaws, are rather small and slender, many crab spiders possess potent venoms that quickly immobilize their prey. Flower spiders, a particular type of crab spider, rest on flowers and remain motionless for long periods of time with their front two pairs of legs extended in readiness. They ambush butterflies, bees, flies, and other flower visitors; their venoms enable them to successfully attack insects much larger than themselves. They do not wrap their prey in silk after biting, but instead remain with the immobilized prey until they have sucked it dry.

Call it a 'flower spider' - much more attractive :))
So, how about the flowers? Have you identified them?

Yes I rather like "flower spider" as for the flower I haven't tried to find that yet. But I will!

It is rather gorgeous.
Is it in your garden?

No - actually it's just growing wild in a ditch at the side of the road!

I am not sure what to make of it. It has an almost unearthly beauty, a bit alien like to me. I would certainly not hang around anywhere near it!

It's amazing how much more I see of life since I got my camera!

Before I would have just walked by and said "nice flowers".

Yes, I can see that...we do tend to just stroll through the world without really seeing it...because Ray and I always walk together, we do notice quite a bit and stop every now and then to study some plant or other or listen to a bird singing...I never ever see anybody else doing it...I have no idea why they don't stop and take a moment to relish something beautiful, but it just doesn't happen...glad you do too....great big hugs....XXX

Quite extraordinary shots of white spider; you keep excelling yourself. Was working on jousting at this moment David.

I almost captured a bee and the spider on the same bloom. Given what I subsequently found out about the spider it would have been a good shot.
