Discreet security of some sort

by Batsman @ Sunday, May. 11, 2008 - 11:24:18

I'm still going through the reems of photographs I took at the Badminton horse trials last week. Found this this morning. The main reason we were actually at Badminton wasn't for the action itself but in the hope of getting a shot of a very famous posh lady with the view to getting several hundred pounds from the photo agency which we regularly use.
Oddly everytime we got anywhere near said woman and had anything that even resembled a long lense, this 4x4 would literally just drive straight into our line of sight and stop. This continued for some time, until eventually I decided to go and confront the guys inside. Upon peering through the window I soon realised that behind the tweet jackets were two very large scary guys.

'Perhaps it's just a coincidence but why do you keep driving straight into my shots?'
'No coincidence mate, NO PHOTOS'

Enough said I thought.

I've no idea who the hell they were, some sort of private security I guessed.

Who?

Hahaha true, I do have other shots but they weren't enthused about me taking them, so I thought this one was probably the best idea, scary guys!

Probably not private and probably armed, Royal protection Corps,
Its no fun if its easy !
If you want to do this sort of thing try using a battered old mirror lens on a digital SLR they look short but offer 11/2 x
the focal length, that could be 750mm with a 500.
Oh and don't get caught !

How did you know it was a royal? Thats a good point now you mention it, you may be right, would they really be armed? It was wierd, it's as if they clocked us as soon as we got out onto the course, my old sigma 500mm isn't the most discreet lense!

Thanks for the advice on the mirror lense, I'll definately look into it! Sounds expensive though!

An old manual focus lens off ebay should cost no more than
£50- 100. You realise that you only get one aperture f8 and some
ND filters with this lens design.

Never conceal the camera when photographing "the family" as
suspicious actions could be misinterpreted by security folk in the current climate.

Nice one, I'll have a quick look now. Thanks for that advice, I guess it's better to get told off rather than shot or something! Do or have you ever done that sort of thing for a living then?
Chris.
