Love It or Hate It ?

by paparazzistyle @ Thursday, May. 08, 2008 - 15:10:53

I was out yesterday on a bluebell shoot (BORING) but it has to be done. As I have a boredom threshold equal to that of a gnat I decided to get creative.
This shot was created with a slow speed , handheld and a vertical pan.

Love it or hate it ?

The bluebell shoot was ok but I have better on file however I also created a nice generic
woodland shot that might sell well in the future.

Hi Chris,
The new tripod has arrived however I used my old one yesterday it is much better but much heavier.
The head that I bought with new tripod is minging as it@s not as described, I will name the supplier if it does not work out.

Thanks for the comment, give this technique a try its great fun!

OOPs Sorry spice I had forgotten how fond you are of these little blue critters I have a few more shoots planned in the woods nearer home in the next few days.

Truth be told the wood in Wales I visited yesterday was past its best in terms of bluebells

I must try harder !

Great shot which should sell. Are you good at selling pictures ? If yes I wish it would rub off on me ! David.

Hi David,
I'm better at creating pictures than selling them,
thats why I use photo libraries .
I think you just have to keep on knocking on doors, if the stuffs right it will sell.

I'm just trying to use my own web site and getting advice from bloggers and anybody with experience David.

Hi David,
I would advise finding a online photolibrary and find
a subject you know about and exploit that as good captions sell pictures.
Do not use a micro stock agency and always License your images
never go copyright free.
The BFP can be a good starting point for direct sales but you have to be thick skinned as the number of reject slips will
outnumber the sales.
Research, Research & Research you market look at the style that the client is buying and do your own version and if poss better what they are using.
Flawless technique is a prerequisite.

Good Luck...

Many thanks; I also got advice from Usksider and am trying to follow that. My web site is lochnessimages.com but maybe £" an image is too cheap ! David.

Hi David ,
I have visited your site and the thing that strikes me is that most of these images were created by you for you
The key is to create images almost to order for your target market, the editing has to be ruthless, from my half day shoot
the other day I made 75 exposures 69 of these have been edited out my petrol costs were £20 and I don't want to think about the depreciation on my gear.
If your images only cost one pound then that is
how much they are worth, its quality not quantity this is a very
competitive business it is all about perceived value, you should have a good idea of who your clients are, then its just a case of supply and demand.

Lee Frost published a good book on selling pictures it's worth a look.

Thanks very much; I will read Lee Frost's book if I haven't given it away !
I will reconsider what I'm trying to do in the light of your comprehensive advice. David.

Hi David,
Reading it back it seems harsh, the editing process
is essential as okay shots bring the level of a submission down.
The client is king and he knows it !
The world is awash with digital images however well considered
and executed imagery will always find a market.
Less is more !

But don't expect to be rich, just happy !

I have found that its unexpected shots which sometimes sell ! My web site is just an inexpensive experiment to test the market. I took the Photographers Market News Letter at about £40 per year for 5 or 6 years but stopped it as its such poor value. I have recently taken shots of local sport and am now making folk aware of where to see their images so will have to see what happens. In my case its not a way to make serious money but it is satisfying when someone makes a purchase. Thanks for your advice David.

Hi David,
Should you choose to become an event photographer
then thats a different proposition. Done well you should expect to work hard.
An event photographer should expect to be rich but creativley
unhappy!

Well I enjoy trying to get that unusual image but events like motocross allow an event and for me a special shot ! David.
