What's the real colour?

by antlady69 @ Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2008 - 04:40:51

This weekend I was playing with my camera's white balance settings while walking in a forest with a cloudy sky (sun peaking through only every once in a while).

The problem now: I can't tell for sure which photo represents the actual colours because of the different monitors! My monitor at home shows the colours different from the one at work. So which photo is correct, and/or how far can I go in Photoshop?

See for yourself:

Auto WB Schatten WB

Bächlein in auto WB Bächlein in Shadow WB

The first photos are auto, the second changed to shadow setting. The colours in shadow setting are too rich, but I have to admit I like them better :)

So go with what I like best?? Or what's closer to reality?

P.S.: I guess there's a similar problem when you print photos. Each printer will print the colours slightly differently.

Playing with the white balance can produce some interesting results... especially if you have a 'vivid' or 'chrome' photo mode. ;)

Damn, you're quick to answer! Another sleepless night, luv?

I do like the different hues - but it's proof again that you can't trust photos nowadays, too many ways to tamper with them! :D

Yeah, no sleep for old Usky... :**:

We've always manipulated images though... just that we used to do it in the dark. ;)

I would have said the right hand ones seem more natural, the left hand ones seems to have a blue tinge. I shoot in Raw mode and therefore sort out the settings after I have down loaded them. It gives me an advantage in that I can choose which setting looks best at my leisure, there are other setting I can change as well.

Good morning!

Sorry for this late reply.

Unfortunately I don't know enough about Raw and Photoshop to do what you do, plus the photo sizes are too big in Raw (I know you can downsize them in PS).

The right-hand photos do look more pleasing to the eye, but actually, the photos on the left come closer to the original colours. They were taken on a mountain where there was still snow (i.e. colours not so bright) on a partially cloudy and slightly hazy day.

But you see what I mean :) No-one can tell for sure what the real colours are like, because of camera settings, monitor colours, print-outs etc.

So I guess we just alter the photos to what we like best, eh? :))

I have to agree with Rabbit: the left one looks a bit too bluish.

As for the more general issue of white balance and colour, experimentation is the best thing. Just keep fiddling with the settings all the time until you find settings you like the most. The tricky part is remembering afterwards what you did to make the pictures you like the most.

Cheers, Tom.

Good morning to you too, Tom!

Yep, the remembering is what I always have problems with too! :))

Like I explained in my previous reply to Rabbit, the colours on the left, although less pleasing to the eye, come closer to the original colours in nature as it was high up on a mountain where snow was still on the ground (i.e. colours not so bright) and it was partially cloudy and a bit hazy.

But I guess I'll alter settings (and photos in PS) to how I like them best, not what things really looked like in nature ;D

Ah I see, the snow and quality of light explains the bluish tinge then. Making the pictures to suit yourself sounds like the best policy :-)

Cheers, Tom.
