Oath of Allegiance

by davidjohn @ Wednesday, Mar. 12, 2008 - 22:05:45

Yesterday Lord Goldsmith put forward the idea of extending citizenship ceremonies to all young people at a 'coming of age ' event at 18 with an oath of allegiance to the Queen or simply to the country. It does not seem appropriate to me for the man who gave the opinion which led to the invasion of Iraq to be advising on this or any other subject. People like me feel a sense of shame that the country was led to war on a bogus prospectus. Proud to be British will be the watchword only when the politicians who followed George Bush's lead are well and truly out of office.

Sends shivers down my back the idea of swearing an oath of allegiance to the Queen for our young people...that is totally unacceptable in my view...by all means, if you must swear allegiance to something, swear to uphold what Britain stands for as a country, but don't make youngsters swear to defend and uphold the monarchy, which is the prime example of inequality and elitism, something no youngster should be taught is a good thing...frightening suggestion and one I hope will have a lot of people in this country raising objections to its inclusion in such an allegiance of citizenship...big hugs...

Thank you for looking in again and not disagreeing violently.
The Blair clique have brought Britain into terrible disrepute around the world, increased the threat of terrorism and cost tax payers a fortune. If that weren't enough they have destabilized oil supplies and now we are all paying at the pumps.

The politicians in power are so smart they will talk about anything, schools, health or any subject but not Iraq and the public have seemingly fallen for it . It reminds me of Brear Rabbit..... Do anything to me but don't throw me into the
' prickly bramble bush '
David.

I agree with the comments above, I am just waiting for the opportunity to get out of this country. I served in the armed forces for a long time and now am ashamed to be British.

Thank God there are still folk like you and me who realise the country is still run by the man [ and his coterie ] who wrote the cheques for war !

Hi all,
This picture says more than you think !
That is the European Robin on top of the British flag and its
also our National bird!

Sounds about right to me.

Well thank you for popping in ! That picture took quite a time to make. Its not a photoshop layers job but an actual robin on an actual flag. David.

I do not doubt the time and effort this image required or its
authenticity. my comment is based on the irony of the image !

Its always nice to pop in here, I have enjoyed seeing your latest floral pix. I know how much thought goes into creating what appears at first glance to be simple studies.

Your control of depth of field, lighting and backgrounds is not wasted on me!

Well just went to Nairn Harbour and Sea Beach and took around 250 images though many will be dumped but the weather was interesting and I liked seeing folk getting their boats ready to sail at Easter. David.

Did you have to wait ages for the Robin to land on the flag? It's very colourful.

The oath of allegiance is a horrible idea, and we should never have gone to Iraq.

But what can we do? With the system as it is, we vote in a government and then the government can do what the hell they like for 5 years until the next election. If we don't like what they do, there is effectively nothing that can be done about it. How this basic problem could be fixed, I have no idea.

Tom,
The situation is worse than awful because even if the Tories were in power they'd have done the same. Now Charles Kennedy is deposed there's no one pointing out that the petrol price escalation is due to the Iraq war and exposing the increased risk of death and destruction we all face resulting from government actions. Only Georgous George Galloway is still shouting ! David.

PS The robin came and went a hundred times before he faced the right way and there was a gleam in his eye. I used a distant air release button and hid in my porch. I was ridiculed by my family for spending so much time getting one shot. I placed crumbs to entice the bird. David.

I agree that the Tories would have done the same, but I do see a basic flaw in the system, in that we can't do anything to change government plans as they have a 5-year mandate.

George Galloway has a lot going for him at the moment, as long as his haters don't manage to bring him down.

We totally agree on this then. Its nice not to feel isol;ated in one's views David.

Don't worry, you are not alone.

Back on this whole allegiance thing: it really REALLY annoys me.

It's not the way things are done here and just feels completely wrong. You can't make people think a certain way by making them say it. The whole idea is thoroughly ridiculous.

But for people I consider to be war criminals to be proposing such a thing is outrageous ! David.

I see them as war criminals too, but I suspect we are in a fairly small minority.

Well if you kill one person by careless driving you will be in big trouble but going to war based on dodgy evidence, you might say rigged evidence, has led to thousands of deaths military and civilian. That speaks for itself. David.
